Stiles was a featured guest on Saturday, September 21, at Stonehill College’s Oakes Ames Symposium.            “I’m interested in the rise of the contemporary world,” he said during a break from the forum.           Born near the town of Foley, Minnesota, Stiles graduated with a bachelor’s degree in history from Carleton College in 1986. Three years later, he completed graduate studies in European history at Columbia University. Although he ultimately discarded his original plan to enter academia, he quickly found a job at Oxford University Press in New York City, editing history anthologies and writing descriptions for published books.            Stiles attributes this success to a friendship he made with an executive at Oxford.     ...

By Amy McCarron Stonehill News Blog Staff The topic of technology in classrooms is a big discussion in our society with all the new technology these days.  Using laptops for college exams reduced student scores slightly, according to a recent study aimed at gathering information on whether laptops should be banned, Elizabeth Stringer Keefe, co-author of Remixing the Curriculum: The Teacher’s Guide to Technology in the Classroom discussed her thoughts on this topic, and Nicole Yanoff, a student at the University of Delaware also gave her input on this topic that she is very interested in. While researchers continue studying technology in the classroom, educators and students are navigating whether and when technology works in academic settings as well.  Computers are such a big part of the K-12 curriculum as well as college which is why this study was conducted at West Point University to see if using laptops during class has an impact on students’ grades. Following his career, he now owns Dana Barros Basketball Club in Stoughton, Mass.                         He attended Boston college where he was the first player in their program’s history to score over 2,000 career points.             “I didn’t actually get offered a basketball scholarship.
